Black Hounds of Death

  1. BLACK HOUNDS OF DEATH - A computer painting. It appears on the dust jacket of the book, "BLACK HOUNDS OF DEATH," by Robert E. Howard, published by Wildside Press in 2009, book 9 in the 10 volume series, "The Weird Works of Robert E. Howard".

When I submitted this painting to the editor he thought it was not suitable as a cover painting, he said it was more suitable as a frontispiece for a book. I assumed therefore, that he would select one of the other paintings I had submitted to him, (see picture No.198). But when the book was published, this rejected painting appears on the DJ. I guess he changed his mind.

The character in this painting is "Solomon Kane", the stories about him take place back in the early colonial times when superstition dominates the souls of men, when fear of God and the devil weighs heavy over the villages and hamlets, a time when the people are often ill-prepared to deal with evil-doers. How fortunate for them that the mysterious Solomon Kane roams the land searching for the evil men who dare break "God's Commandments.
